Words that Puddle (the tutor, Miss Puddleton) resolves to say to the book’s heroine, Stephen Gordon—a young lesbian. Later in the book, Stephen says, “I am one of those whom God marked on the forehead. Like Cain, I am marked and blemished. If you come to me … the world will abhor you, will persecute you, will call you unclean.” (ch. 37, sct. 3) The book was temporarily suspended in the U.S., and, after a notorious trial, banned in Britain, where the editor of the Sunday Express wrote that he “would sooner give a healthy boy or girl a dose of prussic acid than a copy of it.”
